Educating the Public by Example |
| | | Saturday, September 19th, was a beautiful late-summer day—perfect for the Celebrate Hudson festival. It was a great day for the community, and a good one for the planet too. Green Hudson partnered with Discover Hudson to manage waste at the event. By the end of the day, our team had collected a dozen bags of compost and ten huge bags of recyclables, keeping all of it out of the trash. |
| | | None of this would have been possible without our amazing volunteers. From early-morning setup through the final tear-down, they spent hours staffing the waste stations, sorting materials, and collecting trash across the event grounds. Their efforts made a real difference, and we're grateful to every one of them. |
| | | Special thanks also go to Scout Troop 77, who collected all the redeemable cans from the day. That's one more way waste turned into something useful. |

As a post script: Everyone who enjoyed Celebrate Hudson also deserves a big thank you! There were several unstaffed recycle locations throughout the town where people showed their awareness of the differences between trash, recyclables and compostables. Keep in mind that trash will dwindle townwide as people get used to recycling and composting at home. |

Energy Committee. The Specialized Code was supported by the Hudson Select Board and included in the vote to create the town warrant for the Town Meeting in November. The Planning Department and Green Hudson will be coordinating a public forum in October. |
| | | Green Hudson facilitated a meeting with Sara Ross of UndauntedK12 with HPS Superintendent Brian Reagan, School Committee Chair Christopher Yates, and Finance Director Dan Gale to discuss next steps in the transition to clean energy in Hudson Public Schools. |

Plastics Reduction Committee is thrilled to share that the Board of Health has hired an additional part-time inspector to help local restaurants and stores comply with our plastic reduction by-law. |
| | | We are encouraged by the many Hudson businesses that have already made great strides in meeting the guidelines. At the same time, we know others are still working toward compliance or could use a little extra coaching. |
| | | Do you know a local restaurant doing things right? We want to celebrate them! Please encourage them to apply for Green Hudson's "Stamp of Approval." Several businesses have already applied, and we look forward to recognizing them—along with more standout spots—with local media coverage soon. |

| | | The Energy Affordability Bill is still in conference committee. The MA Coalition for Affordable Energy (MCAE) has been rattling legislators’ cages in many ways during the last month. A lobby day on September 23 was a great success with a hundred or so advocates rallying at the State House to hear speakers on the three demands (Save Mass Save, no cuts to Alternative Compliance Payment [ACP] funds for clean energy, and phase out the Gas System Enhancement Program [GSEP]) and then visited lawmakers to make the case and drop off copies of this one page summary. (Click on DOWNLOAD PDF to access the summary). |
The Coalition is sending out regular emails to all legislators with detailed arguments supporting the three demands. Meetings with key legislators are being scheduled by constituents to reinforce the message and learn from our supporters how to better focus our advocacy. (If you are interested in attending one of these meetings please email: [email protected]). |
| | | Advocates are still expecting an energy bill to come out of conference committee in October, although it is possible that if the House and Senate cannot reach agreement there would be no bill this session. Starting over in 2027 is not a good option because there are many proposals in the Senate version of the bill (GSEP reform, consumer protections, clean energy procurement, etc.) that we need to implement ASAP. |

HeatSmart is Looking for Coaches. Are You Ready to Help Your Neighbors? |
Registration is now open for a free course offered by the HeatSmart Alliance that is designed for volunteers who want to help residents in their communities switch their primary heating systems to heat pumps. |
| | |
The course provides guidance on residential heating systems and heat pumps, and how to provide guidance on weatherization, heating and cooling system characteristics, heat pumps, and incentives. It also now addresses issues involving electrification work in multi-family buildings. The goal is to provide the volunteers with basic knowledge and skills needed to help residents; and, to make the volunteers aware of other resources available for additional information. Email Jeanette Millard if you have questions. |
