Certification News

New inspection checklist brings inspections and audit reports into alignment with the Demeter USA Standards.

In 2022, Demeter began using the ECERT database system to support our certification workflow and file management processes. ECERT is a shared platform developed to reduce costs and improve collaboration among Demeter certification offices worldwide. Currently, Austria, France, The Netherlands, Spain, ICO, India, Italy, and Demeter USA all utilize this platform, which is managed by BFDI (Biodynamic Federation Demeter International).

Because the platform is shared internationally, all participating organizations have been using the International Checklist with BFDI standard references. This year, however, Demeter USA has taken an important step forward by creating our own customized checklist aligned specifically with Demeter USA standard references, including the addition of sections that apply to recent updates in the Farm Standard.

This new checklist will serve both as the initial review tool for onboarding new clients and as the primary inspection checklist moving forward. One of the most exciting improvements is the new rollover functionality, which allows inspectors to carry forward checklist responses from the previous year. While the first year will require a complete setup, future inspections will be significantly more efficient and streamlined, saving substantial time for both inspectors and clients.

Many of you may have noticed duplicate questions or sections that did not always seem applicable in previous versions of the checklist. We are pleased to share that these issues have been thoroughly reviewed, corrected, and updated to create a more user-friendly and practical inspection experience.

Most importantly, after this initial transition year, the paperwork portion of inspections will become much shorter and more efficient for everyone involved.

Remembering Matias Baker

By Natalie Brinkley

Matias Baker walked this earthly garden as an artist - reverent, attentive, always seeing more than what the surface offered.  He worked with imagination, inspiration, and intuition.

Matias did not simply study anthroposophy; he took it into his very being, letting it transform how he moved through the world and how he worked with the land.  From that deep inner work came gifts and approaches that bore the unmistakable mark of someone who had married spirit and matter into one living act.

To be in his presence was to feel that unity.  Matias sought out the masters, and in those places, he became one himself. Lasting friendships grew in that fertile ground.  His path spread outward to the coasts of North, Central, and South America, and far beyond, where his work continued to grow and take root.

Matias radiates now from the constellation of biodynamic beings who continue to work through us from the spiritual world - and who remain present to every hand that stirs a preparation, every heart that farms with intention.  Our hearts are with Svava and Matias’s family and friends.

We carry his light forward in our work.

Biodynamic in the News

🌱 A recent article in Wine Enthusiast tackled the topic of yields, and whether organic and Biodynamic production methods can increase vineyard productivity.   The article delves into research on direct yields, resilience, and even the longevity of the vines.   Read more here.

🌱  OO Wines, which produces wines made with grapes from Demeter-certified Cooper Mountain Vineyards in  Willamette Valley, Oregon, was recently recognized by Decanter magazine as “one of Oregon’s defining producers working with old-vine fruit.”   Read more about the vineyard and these award-winning wines here.

🌱 Long Island, NY's first certified organic farm, Farrm Wines, added Biodynamic certification to its resume this month.  Read more here and in Evrett’s article below, describing his recent visit to the vineyard.

Demeter Visits Long Island to Promote Biodynamic Certification

Rex Farr called me from Long Island New York earlier this year with a proposal. He had farmed with biodynamic practices for decades but recently succeeded at getting The Farrm vineyard certified Biodynamic! He wanted to let people in the area know about it. He wondered if Demeter could send someone for a press conference to confer the Biodynamic certificate and promote Biodynamic certification by Demeter. I responded “Yes! Let’s give this a go.”

Several people from the media attended along with area farmers and other Biodynamic agriculture supporters. A light rain may have kept a few people away, but 25-30 people attended and heard about the complexities and accolades of Biodynamic farming. The Riverhead LOCAL press had a nice write-up of the event:  Calverton vineyard, organic since 1985, is now biodynamic certified.

Thanks to Rex and Connie Farr for their hospitality in hosting this event and partnering with Demeter Association to spread the word about Biodynamic certification.

New York has a long history with Biodynamic farming. Ehrenfried Pfeiffer landed there in the 1930s bringing biodynamic practice and research to the USA by founding what is now the Threefold Community Farm. Marjory Spock lives on Long Island and was an early contributor to biodynamic agriculture. In the late 1950s, she sued the federal government to stop the spraying of DDT on her farm. Though the lawsuit failed to stop the spaying and was dismissed, the plaintiffs won the right to enjoin the government to require a full scientific review of any proposed activity with potential damaging effects. The research that went into the lawsuit and Marjory’s daily updates on the trial served as inspiration for Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring, which is often noted as pivotal in getting DDT banned in the USA.

New York state is home to several other certified Biodynamic farms and processors: Hawthorne Valley Farm and Creamery, Turtle Tree Seed, and Herman J Wiemer Vineyard.
