Wilmot Township Election - Important Voter Infomation |

Voting has begun for the Wilmot Election! Here is some very important information to know before casting your vote:
We need a Mayor and Council that are willing to stand up for our community!
How can some candidates be endorsing the new Wilmot Official Plan when our farmland and water are not adequately protected? |
|
| | | It has been extremely troubling to hear some candidates for Mayor and Council claiming that the Wilmot industrial mega-site that the Province and the Region of Waterloo are forcing upon the residents of Wilmot is a “done deal” and there is nothing that we can do, while our farmland and water still lack essential protection. The overwhelming majority of citizens across Wilmot have expressed serious concerns for over two and a half years and made it clear that the desired future is to remain a small, rural, agriculturally focussed municipality. Few people in Wilmot want to become a large urban city with tens of thousands of new residents and one of the largest industrial complexes in Canada – despite the clear intentions of others to force this future on our communities. |

Inadequate New Wilmot Official Plan |
| | | The new Wilmot Official Plan passed by our current Council and submitted to the Province for approval two years ahead of the deadline, severely weakens the protection of farmland and encourages the mega-projects and rapid growth opposed by most citizens. The new Official Plan explicitly permits: - Increasing Wilmot’s population by a minimum of 12,000 people by 2051, not 8,000 people as some candidates have stated.
- Expanding existing settlement areas and creating new settlement areas on farmland, even though we have sufficient land already zoned residential to accommodate our population growth until 2051.
- Developing large scale employment areas on farmland, even though Wilmot has vacant industrial lands that have sat empty for over two decades.
- Developing renewable energy systems on farmland, including wind turbines, large-scale solar farms and biogenic incinerators.
- Forcing the Township to collaborate with the Province and the Region to develop the 770 acres into an industrial mega-site.
If the Ontario Government approves the Official Plan, our local Council will no longer have the legal authority to pass by-laws restricting development on farmland. This is why some candidates are claiming the industrial mega-site is a “done deal”. But it doesn’t have to be. The Municipal Act has a process to withdraw the Official Plan and submit a revised plan that will protect our farmland, water, our Countryside Line, that better reflects the wishes of Wilmot residents. |

We as a Community, Need to Stand Up as a Community |
| | | While other municipalities across Ontario have stood up against “done deals”, Wilmot Council has not. The Stratford Glass Plant was a “done deal” but citizens persistently pushed back and as the horrors of what was being proposed was realized, it was finally cancelled and withdrawn. The community pushed back and won! The Pickering Airport was a “done deal” that now has been reversed with thousands of acres being returned to farmers after years of their community stuck in planning limbo and continual decline. City of Ottawa - Watters Road Expansion was a “done deal”. The controversial urban boundary expansion that added a 37-acre farm in Orléans to Ottawa's urban area was completely reversed by the Ontario Government. This property was removed from the official plan and restored to its protected status rather than being opened up for suburban development after heavy public criticism and a unanimous pushback from Ottawa City Council. We need elected officials who are going to stand up for our community - who are going to push back to protect our farmland, save our greenspace, and our water. We can say “NO” to the Region and the Provincial Government. |
