STORK FICTION (FRANCE, 2023, 9:32)

Image description

Dear friends,

We're thrilled to officially present Stork Fiction, a short dance-film directed by Mehdi & Nourddine Sli, co-imagined and co-performed with the seven international artists and designers, Daniel Parnitzke, Evey Kwong, Jasmin Sisti, Hadrien Vénat, Léone Salinas Muñiz, Pollyanna Moss, Wendy Owusu.

Produced thanks to the Mondes Nouveaux artistic programme – a funding initiative promoted by the French Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the Conservatoire du Littoral (the French coastal protection agency) – Stork Fiction was conceived and filmed during a two-week creative residency organised by d-o-t-s at Domaine de Boisbuchet (France) in 2022.

The film is a poetic celebration of the white storks that populate the estuary of the Charente river, in Western France, and that are more and more stopping their transcontinental migrations because of Climate Change. The result of conversations and workshops with a series of bird specialists, Stork Fiction explores the power of dance as a medium to tell engaging embodied stories and the potential of fiction to address current environmental and societal issues.

Stork Fiction is distributed through international dance-film festivals and as an exhibit in art & design museums. Below are more details about the project. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Greetings from France,

Laura & Olivier

Synopsis

Can art and design create novel bridges with other living beings and repair bonds broken by centuries of anthropocentrism? Can they help us understand the ways of inhabiting the world of other-than-human animals so that we might establish new manners of cohabitation with them? Philosophers Vinciane Despret and Donna Haraway suggest that the creation of anticipatory stories – stories mixing fiction and reality – can allow us to imagine new forms of interaction with the other-than-human world. Following Despret and Haraway’s intuition, Stork Fiction is a dance-film celebrating the white storks that populate the estuary of the Charente River (France) and that are stopping their transcontinental migrations because of Climate Change. Directed by Mehdi & Nourddine Sli, and shot in the Charente region, the film evokes a day in the life of a couple of white storks – interpreted by the two dancers Jasmin Sisti and Léone Salinas Muñiz. After their slow awakening at sunrise, the two embark on a journey that brings them in contact with a group of humans who are building a series of wooden nests for them. The encounter is followed by a moment of dense oneiric flight that ends with an intimate mating dance at sunset. Combining handheld camera movements, drone shots, and steady sequences, the film is an invitation to the audience to slow down and attend to the otherness of these birds from a creative and poetic perspective.
