Annual Conference on South Asia

Annual Conference on South Asia

January 27, 2023

Call for Proposals

Dear ACSA Community,

We hope you are all safe and well.

In 2023, the UW-Madison Center for South Asia will be celebrating over a half a century of hosting the Annual Conference on South Asia! Given the many uncertainties since the onset of covid, we remain committed to exploring different approaches that enhance participation and inclusion for those who cannot travel to Madison. While we anticipate a predominantly in-person conference, this year we will equip up to three breakout rooms with two-way communication devices, making nearly 20% of all sessions available for hybrid or all-virtual participation. Links to these sessions will be made available to all registered attendees, and international scholars attending virtually will receive a significantly reduced registration fee. We hope this will greatly increase participation, in addition to the over 50 registration fee waivers we were able to provide last year. We continue to listen and adjust to feedback we receive from attendees each year in creating a safe, inclusive space for all, and we greatly appreciate the solidarity and support we have received over the last few years!

The submission portal for the 51st Annual Conference on South Asia will open on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, for all proposal types. The theme for this year's conference is Structure and Spontaneity. We invite proposals related to all countries of South Asia across a diverse range of disciplines. The 51st ACSA is scheduled to meet in-person, October 18-21, 2023 (Wed-Sat), at the Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor's Club in Madison, Wisconsin.

Submission Deadlines (by 11:59 PM CST)

• Symposium proposals: Wednesday, March 1, 2023

• Panel, round table, and single paper proposals: Wednesday, April 5, 2023

• Film proposals: Thursday, June 1, 2023. Please email the Conference Coordinator with submission materials.

Participants will see some minor changes to the registration and submission forms this year. Please review the Submission Guidelines before completing the submission process.

We strongly encourage panel submissions to demonstrate diverse gender representation and a balance of scholars across career stages. Please note conference policy barring multiple submissions, as well as the limitations on the number of panels within which each individual may appear. Presenters must register to participate in the conference.

Updates for 2023

Apart from the submissions we receive, we invite participants to propose special lunchtime round table topics to ensure that conversations adjacent to South Asian Studies are included on Conference programming. We encourage interested participants to submit these proposals under the Round Table category. Please note that these are not expected to be scholarly discussions, but rather structured conversations around timely and important topics relevant to the field. Example topics include current regional crises, professional development topics, or teaching South Asia. Please contact the Conference Coordinator with questions.

2023 Policy on Virtual Participation

Organizers recognize that public health conditions and other factors will create circumstances in which some scholars will not be able to attend this year's conference in Madison. Participants submitting in-person panels may allow for one (1) planned virtual presentation as part of their proposal. Arrangements for virtual (Zoom) or pre-recorded presentations must be coordinated by the session organizer/chair and are subject to the approval of conference organizers. Conference refund policies do apply. All refund requests must be received by September 15, 2023.

If you would like to help increase ACSA access for conference participants who lack institutional support, please donate here.

We look forward to welcoming you to Madison in October. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions!

Sincerely,
Andrea Fowler, Conference Coordinator
