| | I can’t believe that we are proofing the October edition of the magazine right now! It feels like the summer has both sped by and gone on for longer than expected (with bright weather still making an appearance every other day). It’s an inspiring issue full of insightful stories and tactile techniques – I can’t wait to share it with you towards the end of next month.
I’m excited to say that we’re part of the Print Press & Roll exhibition next February and with my Bristol Print Collective hat on, I’ve been reaching out to some of my favourite printmakers – I have to say, the line-up is looking superb. I’ll share more here as our plans progress, but safe to say it's one to get in your diary. Love print? It’s even open on Valentines Day, so why not come and get your loved one a special print!
For now, we bring news of upcoming shows, moths on shoes, letterpress coasters, a day to celebrate Corita Kent and dreamy Norwegian residencies. Be sure to read on.
Keep well and keep on rolling… |

| | Glasgow calling Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) is marking its bicentenary with a new exhibition which runs from 2nd October – 28th November. RSA 200 @ Glasgow Print Studio brings together four of their academicans for what looks to be a mesmerising show of varied media and ideas. Printmaking highlights include Caroline Walker’s new Early Years etchings, which bring her focus on women’s often unseen care work into printmaking and Barry McGlashan’s dream-like paintings, which explore the relationship between memory, folklore and the possibilities of translating painting into print. |

Beasties Afoot For those of you familiar with the wallpaper of Timorous Beasties, you might be interested that their work has left the vertical and gone horizontal. In their first collaboration combining one of their most recognisable room-scale prints with Tracey Neul’s iconic GEEK Derby shoe. A moth on a shoe – what’s not to love? ART OFF THE WALL will attempt to answer “What happens when artwork leaves the wall and becomes something designed to move?” Be ready to see the beasties in action. |

| | Collecting Fragments Nicola Neate is an artist based in the Outer Hebrides who works primarily with photopolymer gravure. She got in touch with us recently and, as lovers of printmaking and the outdoors, we thought her creative practice was fascinating. She makes the most of her surroundings by going on long walks and collecting fragments of material matter, fallen flora and fauna and discarded objects, which she then photographs or scans before translating them to a photopolymer plate and using traditional intaglio methods to print them. She says, “I’m particularly interested in the way photopolymer gravure allows contemporary digital image-making to sit alongside traditional print processes – how the image changes as it moves through each stage.” |

| | Small But Mighty Exhibition It was our pleasure to offer an award at the RE’s recent Small But Mighty exhibition, with Catherine Purves a worthy winner of a 4-issue subscription for her work Floating – a series of metal panels and paper based prints that aim to give time and space for thought. “Symbotic landscape details, patterns or motifs become phrases, which are assembled into personal narratives that look at both the smaller and bigger picture” explains Catherine. |

Feeding The Old Gietz Platen We were excited to see the latest works by Pressing Matters past-contributor, and all-round printmaking star, Hugh Ribbans, who got in touch to share a few images from a recent session in collaboration with the Hellbox Foundry Press for the Fry Art Gallery Annual Sale invitation. The work takes the form of a coaster, with the design a nod to the Fry Art Sale imagined in Bawden’s artwork of Braintree Market – here’s Ed Denovan feeding the old Gietz Platen press with Hugh's new designs. |
